The Karpets are an Inspiral Carpets tribute band, but a tribute band with a difference: their lead singer Tom Hingley was actually the lead singer with Inspiral Carpets from 1989-2011. Tom sang on all the Inspirals chart hits, including This is How it Feels, Saturn Five, Dragging Me Down, I Want You, She Comes in the Fall and all the songs on the bands four Major label albums - Life(1990) The Beast Inside (1991) Revenge of the Goldfish (1992) and Devil hopping(1994).
Formed in 2016, The Karpets have played barnstorming sets at Shine On Weekender,Embrace’s Secret Festival , Readipop Festival, Vicars Picnic, Rochdale Live, Darwen Live, Festival Too & headlinesets at the 100 Club, Audio in Glasgow and over thirty other UK clubs to date.
The band comprises: Tom Hingley (lead vocals), Dickon Kyme Wright on keys & backing vocals, Philip McIntyre on guitar & backing vocals, Ste Pearce on bass and drummer Malcolm Law.
The Karpets can play all of Inspirals Greatest Hits as well as the whole of theband’s Revenge of the Goldfish album and a healthy selection of obscure B-side and fan favourites.
The live experience is raw, dynamic, punky & energetic. The band play like their very existence depends on it with humour, skill and volume.
BLACK GRAPE could only have been made in Manchester. The swagger, fun and cryptic humour seem hewn from a city historian AJP Taylor once described as offering an archetypally different wayof English urban life to London. Both Shaun Ryder and Paul Leveridge, known as Kermit, came from edgy-but-cool parts of the city. In Shaun’s case Salford, with Kermit originating Moss Side.
So we have two restlessly creative men, both from the wrong side of the tracks, neither inclined to go to art school or enrol on an MFA programme, yet loaded with street smarts and musical talent, and wanting the world. Good old punk had told every scally they could have it, and a generation of us went for it in our own ways, with varying degrees of success. Shaun’s astonishing rise and fall with the Happy Mondays is the stuff of legend.
As the friendship developed, so too did a stunning collaboration. It’s Great When You’re Straight...Yeah,the ironically entitled album, which gave a nod to their hook up as drugs buddies around the grizzled fag end of Happy Mondays and Kermit’s band The Ruthless Rap Assassins. It was a storming phoenix rising from the ashes of theother projects that seemed to have run their course.
It’s Great When YourS traight...Yeah wa sone of my favourite albums of, well I’m calling Shaun from the airport in Milan, and he’s assuring me it was over twenty years ago. Black Grape followed this up with Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, which, while not hitting the giddy heights of its predecessor, had enough moments to cement the band as a fixture.Then...nothing. Till now.
Shaun’s triumphs, struggles and diversions have been well documented. The usual contract and money hassles, abest-selling account of life in the Mondays, a stunning electropunk album from nowhere in Amateur Night in the Big Top, a serious and informativeinvestigation of UFO’s as an author and broadcaster, a reality TV bon vivant and finally, a life as a clean-living family man, which has supplanted hisold ways. And of course, there was the reformation of the Happy Mondays.
Years of hard living, however, had taken their toll on Kermit. He would develop health issues making a remarkable recovery from his life-threatening condition and operation, and this would bethe catalyst for another Black Grape collaboration.
Black Grape are back on the road, and with new album Pop Voodoo that really does rock the **** out of the discotheque. It’s a rewind to over twenty years ago and the glory days. Shaun’s word play has never been deployed to such devastating effect, and he scores a bullseye whether he hits the obvious targets (Trump), and the more obscure ones...well, find out for yourself. The world is in a bit of a state right now,and bull reigns more than ever, and perversely disguised as candour. We need Manc street sass, intelligence and wit more than ever right now. This album has that in spades.
Pop Voodoo was released on 4thAugust 2017 on UMC.

In August 1968 fouryoung musicians convened in a small rehearsal room in London and performed anold Johnny Burnette song ‘Train Kept A-Rollin’.
This was the birth of Led Zeppelin.
Little did Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant or John Bonham realise atthe time what the future held for them but within a very short period of timethey were the biggest band in the world and despite disbanding in 1980 theystill are.
Throughout 2018 Whole Lotta Led will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of thebirth of Led Zeppelin with a show that will include songs from all of theirstudio albums, ranging from their beautiful acoustic songs to the huge anthemswe have come to know and love.
Now in their 22nd year, Whole Lotta Led are widely regarded as the closest tothe original that you will ever hear with their five piece line-up reproducingthe songs as near to the album versions as possible.
50 years on Led Zeppelin’s influence and importance is as strong as ever, WholeLotta Led are here to demonstrate why.
Regarded with awe throughout themusic world, Lee “Scratch” Perry holds status as one of the most enduring andoriginal reggae producers and artists of all time. From his early days in the 1960’s as a singerand engineer for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One in Kingston, through his productionof the seminal Wailers’ classics African Herbsman and SoulRevolution, Perry’s innovative style marks him as one of reggae’s originaltreasures. His on the edge creativegenius remains evident in his own solo albums of the 1970’s through his steadystream of mind-boggling releases of the 1980’s.
One of reggae’s undisputedpioneers, Lee “the Upsetter” Perry has worked with almost everyone from theHeptones to the Skatalites to the Clash. Certainly one of his most notable contributions was the pairing of BobMarley, to Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer with the Barnet Brothers (Carley and“Familyman” who had been the heart of the Perry’s group, the Upsetters) andthus the forming of the Bob Marley and the Wailers.
After his own studio, “BlackArk,” burned to the ground in the late 1970’s, Perry laid low for a while, onlyto resurface with a vengeance in England in the mid-1980’s. He went back into the studio with a varietyof partners, from Adrian Sherwood to Terence Trent D’Arby. During this time, Perry took up residence inthe Swiss Alps (“The mountains give me the fresh Swiss air to replenish mystructure so I can soon join the immortal race”). Proof positive that talent on this scale willwin out no matter what, since the “madman” has come down from the mountain, theWorld Music market has been gifted with more Lee Perry Product.
Perry’s stream of consciousnessrants have been called the babblings of the lunatic by some to the offerings ofa prophet by others. Either way, hisunique dubbing style is infectious. Often, the words are broken down into theirpurest elements, sound and feeling. Perry’s groundbreaking use of sound effects, echo reverb, and rewindadds a new dimension to the folk tradition of Reggae and has influencedcountless other artists.
In his plethora of newermaterial, “Scratch” expounds on his favourite themes of extraterrestrials, judgment, justice, corruption, carnality, and self proclamation, all over somekiller riddims.
Always one to follow the beat ofhis own drummers, the eccentric genius Perry continues to break new ground withthe hardest rebel Rasta tunes and the most unpredictable instrumentaldubs. Lee Perry has most recently beentouring Europe, riveting both old and new fans with a full measure of hisblessings.
The “Upsetter” charges forwardmaking music that recalls African roots, at the same time, it reaches for thevastness of the outer space.
Lee isperhaps the only 80 + year old that can dance on one leg for 1 hour straight!
