Regarded with awe throughout themusic world, Lee “Scratch” Perry holds status as one of the most enduring andoriginal reggae producers and artists of all time. From his early days in the 1960’s as a singerand engineer for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One in Kingston, through his productionof the seminal Wailers’ classics African Herbsman and SoulRevolution, Perry’s innovative style marks him as one of reggae’s originaltreasures. His on the edge creativegenius remains evident in his own solo albums of the 1970’s through his steadystream of mind-boggling releases of the 1980’s.
One of reggae’s undisputedpioneers, Lee “the Upsetter” Perry has worked with almost everyone from theHeptones to the Skatalites to the Clash. Certainly one of his most notable contributions was the pairing of BobMarley, to Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer with the Barnet Brothers (Carley and“Familyman” who had been the heart of the Perry’s group, the Upsetters) andthus the forming of the Bob Marley and the Wailers.
After his own studio, “BlackArk,” burned to the ground in the late 1970’s, Perry laid low for a while, onlyto resurface with a vengeance in England in the mid-1980’s. He went back into the studio with a varietyof partners, from Adrian Sherwood to Terence Trent D’Arby. During this time, Perry took up residence inthe Swiss Alps (“The mountains give me the fresh Swiss air to replenish mystructure so I can soon join the immortal race”). Proof positive that talent on this scale willwin out no matter what, since the “madman” has come down from the mountain, theWorld Music market has been gifted with more Lee Perry Product.
Perry’s stream of consciousnessrants have been called the babblings of the lunatic by some to the offerings ofa prophet by others. Either way, hisunique dubbing style is infectious. Often, the words are broken down into theirpurest elements, sound and feeling. Perry’s groundbreaking use of sound effects, echo reverb, and rewindadds a new dimension to the folk tradition of Reggae and has influencedcountless other artists.
In his plethora of newermaterial, “Scratch” expounds on his favourite themes of extraterrestrials, judgment, justice, corruption, carnality, and self proclamation, all over somekiller riddims.
Always one to follow the beat ofhis own drummers, the eccentric genius Perry continues to break new ground withthe hardest rebel Rasta tunes and the most unpredictable instrumentaldubs. Lee Perry has most recently beentouring Europe, riveting both old and new fans with a full measure of hisblessings.
The “Upsetter” charges forwardmaking music that recalls African roots, at the same time, it reaches for thevastness of the outer space.
Lee isperhaps the only 80 + year old that can dance on one leg for 1 hour straight!
Although the band weren’t topping the charts andappearing on TV with such regularity as in the mid 1970s, life was no less busyas they continued to perform for fans old and new alike – but with the dawn ofthe new millennium things were about to take off once again.
In 2000 a new CD was issued ‘The Finest Arvest of theWurzels’ – a massive collection of the Wurzel’s hits. This major seller wasclosely followed by ‘The Wurzels Collection’ – more back numbers reissued. Theband came under new and proactive management in the form of Sil Willcox, anestablished manager and record producer (most well known of his groups perhapsbeing ‘The Stranglers’). Under his care and guidance the Wurzels produced a newalbum ‘Never Mind The Bullocks’ which consisted of covers of modern pop songs.
Two singles from this album were to put the band back on themap. The first was ‘Combine Harvester remix 2001’ – an upbeat version of their1976 chart topper, closely followed by ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, originallysung by a group known as Oo-Ar-Sis or should that be Oasis! These releasesopened the floodgates and the Wurzels haven’t looked back since – and certainlynot in anger!
Further albums of fresh recordings followed along withnumerous appearances on TV shows. Requests for gigs poured in – it is notuncommon for the band to play to crowds numbered in their thousands and theirfan base increased massively taking in children, university students and adultsalike. In the summer of 2000 the Wurzels achieved the ultimate accolade – theyplayed at the Glastonbury Festival! Adge Cutler would have been so proud of hislegacy!
The Wurzels’ first commercial video was released in 2002along with another CD - both now highly sought after by collectors. In recenttimes several albums and singles have been released, including their firstcollaborative single ‘Cider Drinker 2007’ along with DJ Tony Blackburn – asingle to raise money for a prostate cancer appeal following band memberTommy Banner’s fight with the disease. More recently a re-recording of thesingle ‘One For The Bristol City’, also a charity single for prostate cancer, tickled the national charts.
Demand for Wurzel music has also resulted in yet another‘Greatest Hits’ collection - there appears to be no end to the phenomenon of‘The Wurzels’ – hardly a day goes by now when they can’t be found on stage, appearing on TV shows, raising money for charities close to their hearts andmost of all bringing so much pleasure to so many people with simple sing-alongnumbers extolling the virtues of living in the land of cider and sunshine.
The Wurzels are regularly asked how long will they keepgoing. The band always respond that they intend to keep going whilst theyenjoy performing – and that suits the rest of us just fin
